The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award also known as HIPA is a prestigious photography competition worldwide and is on it's 3rd year of giving away one of the biggest prizes for a photography competition to date.
They are Non-profit organization headed by Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum the crowned prince of Dubai.
I first learned about this during the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival 2012 when I met one of their people promoting the event, and he is a fellow Filipino. They just go to different places and conventions around the world just to promote the award. This year when the KLPF 2013 came, their booth was my first stop and still found my Filipino friend and was introduced with his other colleagues.
The competition has such high standards that they have also selected best photographers around the world to judge the competition.
This year (2013-2014) their main theme is Creating The Future with the following categories: Creating the Future, General, Black and White and Street Life.
So I participated and entered to all 4 categories. Received emails from them.
I really like the fact that they give feedback to participants if their photos made it to the competition or not. So the photos below were what I received.
The photos I submitted in all categories are all qualified to the second stage of judging.
My entry to the Black and White category was the lone survivor and managed to pass the second round.
Then today I received the news.
So I learned that my one photo did not make it to the final judgement. If it went through I could have been a finalist. Sigh!
Rather than be sad, I am even happy about this result considering I almost made it to the finals. This is one of the things that happen not just in photography but in life in general that you don't always win. This is what keeps me want to improve more about photography, this is what makes my fire for this chosen passion to continuously burn and this experience will help me grow as a photographer. I will continue to join this annual competition and many other photography competitions and will strive to do better next time.
Thank you HIPA for the experience and I will keep on reaching that prize.
